If you don’t know where you’re going

Have you ever had just a line or two of a song stick with you?  Over the last month or so, this has completely happened to me. Whether you listen to country music or not, I think everyone can appreciate just this one line.

“If you don’t know where you’re going, you might end up somewhere else.”

If you want to listen to the song by Toby Keith, check it out here on YouTube. We’re not going to necessary focus on the entire song, really just the one line Smile

Life is all coincidences. One little choice that you believe has no consequence leads you on a certain path. That path opens thousands of doors. The rest of your life will be altered by the one singular door that you choose. Just a few years ago, I thought I would be in graduate school studying to become a psychologist right now. Never in a million years would I have guessed that I would be where I am today.

But, magically here I am. I met Alex one random night at a restaurant/bar that I had never been to before. We took a chance and decided to go on a date just a day later. And now here I am. Whenever I here this line

“If you don’t know where you’re going, you might end up somewhere else.”

I always wonder what would have happened if I decided not to go out that night. Would we have met? I’m a romantic and would like to say yes, we’re soul mates – of course we would have met. But, who really knows if we would have or not. Would we have met years later after countless failed dates?

All of the decisions that I’ve made has lead me here. There’s so much gravity in that statement. All the late night studying, the nasty break-ups, the one-too-many drinks, the car accident that I could have died in, my dad’s illness, the old friends, the fights, the laughs, all lead me to sitting on the couch watching the Sing-Off with the dogs. No, but really – all of the good and bad decisions has lead me here.

I graduated high school with a declared major of meteorology. I quickly realized Calculus just ain’t my thing and updated that bad boy to Criminal Justice and Psychology. I graduated college with absolutely no idea of what I wanted to do or who I wanted to become.

I applied to be a police officer. (Can’t you imagine??) I almost became a researcher at a hospital working with injured soldiers coming home from war.

“If you don’t know where you’re going, you might end up somewhere else.”

Man, did I end up somewhere else?! Sometimes you don’t need a plan. You just wake up one day and you realize that you are right where you’re supposed to be.

I can’t imagine life without these mutt-butts!

Okay — time to stop reminiscing!

Am I crazy or do you think about random stuff like this too?
